The Messy in Financial Advising
There are a few professions that can really see behind the curtain, and I don’t mean in the theater. These people show up, earnestly caring, and getting a fire hose of real life while they try to do their job. Hats off to financial advisors, who stand in the gap and walk along the road during medical illness, death, divorce, bankruptcy, parenting nightmares, and home and business devastation. Conversely, they also get to hear the joys — the weddings, the dreams, the new businesses, the goals, the success, the deep satisfaction of people living out their values and putting their “first things first” effectively. It’s a ride!
It has been said that financial advising is one of the careers that is in a battle with online advice. As more and more financial principles and guidance is available online, those in the financial industry need coaching skills more than ever. And clients want it! I can’t imagine a time when the human connection wouldn’t be valued, and yet our ability to listen, connect, peel back the layers, and walk with people in conversation will be critical to advisor success. That’s why so many financial advisors and support staff come to get training with me! They long to make a deeper connection, make their advice sticky with their clients, and have the satisfaction of making a meaningful impact. Expanding the bottom line, increasing the number of clients, and a growing number of referrals will be pretty awesome, too.
